Genealogist Maureen O'Brien has provided the following information.
Michael O'Brien was born June 18, 1815, in Brough Townland, County Cork, Ireland. He was baptized two miles south of Brough in the Parish of Doneraile, which is in the Diocese of Coyne which includes most of County Cork. In the late 18th century, a thatched-roofed chapel had been built in Doneraile village, adjoining the site of the present church. It was at the end of what is still called Chapel Lane, in the left-hand corner of a grove of Scots Pine trees, and this area was known as The Grove. This chapel was a barn-like structure, roofed with thatch. In 1815, Father William O’Brien became parish priest of Doneraile. He had been educated in France, in one of the Irish colleges such as Paris or Toulouse, and was ordained in 1791 for service in the Diocese of Cloyne and Ross. The present church was completed and dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1827, two years before the arrival of Catholic Emancipation.
Michael O'Brien's parents were Daniel and Ellen Barry OBrien. Brothers Timothy and John were born in Mallow, Cork, in 1823 and 1826. Mallow is ten miles south of Brough. Sister Ellen was born in 1828. Brothers Jeremiah and William were born in Mourne Abbey, Cork, in 1832 and 1835. Mourne Abbey is six miles south of Marrow.
Michael O'Brien and Julia Coffey were married on September 18, 1843, in Churchtown, Cork. St. Nicholas Church in Churchtown, was built in 1839. Father Daniel O'Brien was the parish priest from 1812 to 1838, being replace by Father David O'Leary. A son Patrick was born in Ballynamuck Townland, Cork, in 1845. Ballynamuck Townland is one mile south of Churchtown.
