Bernard McTavey renounced the Queen of England at the Superior Court in 1889. He was living at 834 Fourth Avenue in an area of Manhattan that is now known as the East Village. It is roughly defined as the area east of the Bowery and Third Avenue, between 14th Street on the north and Houston Street on the south. When he received his naturalization from the Superior Court in 1891, he was living a block or so away at 19 Stuyvesant Street in Manhattan.

Next door to 19 at 21 Stuyvesant Street is Hamilton Fish House, a brick Federal style house where Hamilton Fish (Governor and U.S. Senator) lived from 1808-1838. His mother was Elizabeth Stuyvesant. The house was built by her father Peter Stuyvesant, great grandson of Peter Stuyvesant, the last Dutch director-general of the colony of New Netherland until it was ceded to the English in 1664 and was renamed New York.

Elizabeth McTavey was born in Castleblayney, County Monaghan, Ireland, in 1879. She had a brother Patrick and a sister Katherine (Katie). All three emigrated to New York. Bernard McTavey, 38, and Lizzie McTavey, 27, were married on November 21, 1894. The ceremony was at the Methodist Episcopal Chapel at 543-547 East 11th Street in the East Villlage. They lived at 626 E. 13th Street.

Four McTavey children died in in Manhattan between 1898 and 1901.

Bernard McTavey died August 4, 1928, at 27-40 Butler Street, Queens, New York. The cause of death was arteriosclerosis. He was buried August 7, 1928, in Calvary Cemetery. He was born in Ireland in 1856. His parents were Hugh and Bridget McTavey. His wife Elizabeth McTavey survived him. She was born in Ireland on November 17, 1878. Her parents were James and Mary McTavey. Her husband was Bernard McTavey. The informant was Agnes Lyden.
