Next door to 19 at 21 Stuyvesant Street is Hamilton Fish House, a brick Federal style house where Hamilton Fish (Governor and U.S. Senator) lived from 1808-1838. His mother was Elizabeth Stuyvesant. The house was built by her father Peter Stuyvesant, great grandson of Peter Stuyvesant, the last Dutch director-general of the colony of New Netherland until it was ceded to the English in 1664 and was renamed New York. Elizabeth McTavey was born in Castleblayney, County Monaghan, Ireland, in 1879. She had a brother Patrick and a sister Katherine (Katie). All three emigrated to New York. The 1894 city directory for Manhattan, Bernard McTavey, painter, lived at 626 E. 13th Street, in the East Village. Bernard McTavey, 38, and Lizzie McTavey, 27, were married on November 21, 1894. The ceremony was at the Methodist Episcopal Chapel at 543-547 East 11th Street in the East Villlage. They lived at 626 E. 13th Street. Four McTavey children died in in Manhattan between 1898 and 1901.
